Summer Learning at Sherwood

When many people think about summer, they picture a break from school, a slower pace, and time away from routines. But at Sherwood Autism Center, summer is not a pause in progress. It is a season of continued learning, growth, and opportunity.

For the students and adults we serve, the skills built throughout the year matter every day, not just during the traditional school calendar. Communication, independence, emotional regulation, social connection, and daily living skills do not take the summer off. That is why Sherwood remains committed to creating meaningful, structured experiences that help individuals continue to grow when school is out.

Learning Looks Different at Sherwood

At Sherwood, learning has never been limited to worksheets or desks. It happens in classrooms, kitchens, community spaces, sensory rooms, playgrounds, and through daily routines that build confidence over time.

During the summer, that learning continues through:

  • structured routines that support consistency and regulation
  • hands-on activities that build communication and life skills
  • community-based experiences that encourage independence
  • therapeutic supports that help individuals stay engaged and connected
  • opportunities for movement, creativity, and relationship-building

For many of our students, routine is a powerful support. When routines disappear completely, it can be difficult to maintain the momentum they worked so hard to build during the school year. Summer learning at Sherwood helps provide continuity while still making room for joy, exploration, and seasonal fun.

Why Summer Learning Matters

Progress is often built in small, meaningful steps. A student who has worked all year on communication goals, following routines, self-help skills, or peer interaction benefits from continued practice. Without those opportunities, hard-won gains can become more difficult to maintain.

Summer programming helps protect and strengthen progress in areas like:

  • expressive and receptive communication
  • social-emotional growth
  • self-care and daily living skills
  • transition skills
  • functional academics
  • community participation
  • behavior supports and coping strategies

At the same time, summer often creates new opportunities to practice these skills in fresh ways. Cooking projects, outdoor play, sensory experiences, and community outings all help reinforce learning while keeping students engaged.

Growth Beyond the Classroom

One of the things that makes Sherwood unique is our focus on helping individuals use their skills in the real world. Summer creates even more space for that kind of learning.

Whether students are preparing snacks, participating in hands-on projects, building tolerance for new experiences, or spending time in the community, they are doing more than staying busy. They are practicing the skills that support long-term independence and belonging.

For our adult programs, summer learning continues through community outings, volunteer opportunities, cooking groups, goal work, and activities that encourage confidence and connection. For our youth programs, it means continued support in communication, regulation, daily routines, and social participation, all in ways that are individualized and meaningful.

Summer Is Also About Joy

At Sherwood, we know growth happens best in environments where people feel safe, supported, and excited to participate. Summer learning is not just about maintaining progress. It is also about creating joyful experiences that help students and adults feel successful.

That might mean:

  • trying a new activity
  • connecting with peers in a relaxed setting
  • spending time outdoors
  • participating in sensory play
  • building something with their hands
  • laughing together during a group activity
  • discovering a new favorite routine

These moments matter. They help build trust, confidence, and a sense of belonging that carries into every other part of learning.

What Doesn’t Stop When School’s Out

When school is out, what does not stop at Sherwood is our belief in the potential of every individual we serve.

Support does not stop.
Skill-building does not stop.
Connection does not stop.
Belonging does not stop.

Summer is another chapter in the ongoing work of helping children and adults with autism and developmental disabilities grow into what is possible for them. It is a time to reinforce strengths, nurture progress, and continue creating spaces where every person can thrive.

At Sherwood, we are proud to offer learning that lasts beyond the school year — because growth, confidence, and community are worth investing in all year long.
