On October 10, we join the world in observing World Mental Health Day—a global reminder that mental well-being is essential to living a full, empowered life. At Sherwood Autism Center, this isn’t just a one-day reflection. It’s something we commit to every single day.

Mental Health Is Health

At Sherwood, we believe in supporting the whole person—mind and body. For individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD), emotional wellness plays a vital role in daily growth, communication, and connection.

Mental health is not separate from our mission. It’s built into every program we offer—from personalized support plans and sensory-friendly environments to the consistent structure and relationships our students and participants rely on.

Creating Safe Spaces for Emotional Growth

Whether we’re helping a child self-regulate after a tough moment or coaching an adult through community-based volunteering, our staff understands that emotional support is foundational to independence. Through the work of our Special Education, Adult Day, and Supported Employment teams, we meet each individual where they are—with compassion, flexibility, and a trauma-informed lens.

We incorporate mental wellness in many ways:

  • Daily routines that reduce anxiety and increase predictability

  • Therapeutic supports like occupational, speech, and music therapy

  • Social-emotional learning goals in IEPs and ISPs

  • Opportunities for self-expression through art, movement, and play

Our team members are trained to not only recognize emotional needs but to respond with empathy and consistency—because for many of our students and participants, feeling safe is the first step to feeling successful.

Supporting Our Staff & Families, Too

Mental health doesn’t stop with those we serve. We are equally committed to the well-being of our staff and families. From building a culture of gratitude to offering professional development focused on mental wellness and burnout prevention, we know that a healthy team creates a healthier environment for everyone.

We also partner closely with families, providing communication, collaboration, and encouragement as they navigate the challenges and triumphs of life alongside their loved ones.

You’re Not Alone

On this World Mental Health Day, we encourage our entire Sherwood community—students, staff, families, partners, and supporters—to prioritize self-care, speak openly about mental health, and ask for help when it’s needed. Whether you’re advocating for someone else or tending to your own emotional well-being, you are not alone.

Let’s continue building a culture of inclusion, empathy, and support—together.
