Sherwood Autism Center is proud to share that we were recognized with a 2025 Spirit of Service Award by the YMCA of Greater Kansas City! The award was presented during the Y’s 12th annual Spirit of Service Volunteer Celebration on Thursday, November 13, at the Overland Park Convention Center.
This special evening honored outstanding volunteers and partner organizations who go above and beyond to strengthen our Kansas City community. We were humbled to be included in this group of change-makers—especially during such a meaningful celebration, which also marked the Y’s 165th anniversary and coincided with World Kindness Day.
Honoring Our Shared Commitment to Community
Sherwood was honored as the Spirit of Service Award recipient representing the Cleaver Family YMCA, a recognition of the incredible collaboration and shared values between our two organizations. Together, we work to provide inclusive, supportive spaces where every individual can thrive.
Our President and CEO, Kia Walsh, reflected on the award by saying, “This recognition is a true honor for Sherwood. We’re proud to stand alongside so many other inspiring partners and volunteers who share our mission of empowering individuals with autism and developmental disabilities to live their fullest lives.”

A Night to Remember
The evening opened with YMCA pre-K students from Roesland Elementary leading the Pledge of Allegiance and singing the national anthem—setting the tone for a heartfelt program filled with community, purpose, and gratitude.
YMCA President and CEO Mark Hulet reflected on the Y’s legacy of volunteerism, noting that the first 32 years of its history were led solely by volunteers. The current generation of volunteers continues to carry that torch forward, creating lasting impact across the region.
A highlight of the event was a powerful testimonial from Doug Millett, a Kansas City Chiefs Red Coater and dedicated volunteer at the Cleaver Family YMCA mobile food pantry. Doug spoke about how organizations like the Y provided food and support for his family during a time of hardship, and how those experiences inspired his lifelong commitment to giving back.
Looking Ahead
We are deeply grateful for this honor and for the opportunity to serve alongside so many passionate partners who believe in inclusion, kindness, and equity. As we continue our work at Sherwood, we are energized by this recognition and remain committed to creating meaningful change in the lives of the individuals and families we serve.
Thank you to the YMCA of Greater Kansas City for this beautiful celebration—and congratulations to all of the 2025 honorees!
